چکیده

The thermally assisted photoemission (TAPE) effect was investigated for the hexaboride thermionic cathodes (LaB6 and CeB6). It was found that the quantum efficiency of these cathodes can be increased by raising the cathode temperature along with the thermionic emission. In addition both materials can emit a measurable photoemission current by being irradiated with a laser having a photon energy below the work function at sufficiently high cathode temperatures. Our measurements indicate that this process is linear. These results show the significance of the TAPE effect. An additional effect of cathode heating is surface cleaning. This effect was detected as the hysteresis of the quantum efficiency which can be observed by heating up and cooling down the cathode. This effect slightly changes the quantum efficiency but not as much as the TAPE effect.

High magnetic field study of the specific heat of CeB6 and LaB6

2014 The specific heats of CeB6 and LaB6 have been measured over a large range of temperatures and under magnetic fields up to 8 teslas. The data confirm that the intermediate phase of CeB6, the so-called phase II, is favoured by an applied magnetic field Actually both the transition temperature and the associated specific heat anomaly are strongly increased by a magnetic field. To get the magn...

Modern Theory and Applications of Photocathodes

Over the last thirty years, the Spicer Three-Step model has provided a very useful description of the process of photoemission for both fundamental and practical applications. By treating photoemission in terms of three successive steps-optical absorption, electron transport, and escape across the surface-this theory allows photoemission to be related to parameters of the emitter, such as the o...

Surface electronic structure of the NdB6„110... clean surface studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

An angle-resolved photoemission study of the NdB6(110) clean surface has been done in order to investigate in detail the surface electronic structure. From the dependence of the valence-band photoemission spectra on the surface condition and the exciting photon energy, we found additional peaks corresponding to the surface states on the NdB6(110) surface. These surface states are located at aro...

Photocathodes and DC Guns for Next Generation Light Sources

A new class of synchrotron light sources, based on the use of superconducting electron linear accelerators and beam recirculation with energy recovery, is currently under active consideration. The injectors for such accelerators must deliver high brightness electron beams with appropriate RF time structure and the full average beam current. Various photoemission cathodes have been demonstrated ...
